About the challenge

MksU Hackfest 2023 is a campus level hackathon organized to nurture creativity, foster relentless innovation, and empower talented minds to tackle real-world challenges. Presented by the Machakos University Tech Community, this marks the inaugural edition of "MksU HackFest." Rooted in a commitment to nurturing problem-solving, fostering collaboration, and sparking creativity, "MksU Hackfest 2023" stands as a powerful catalyst propelling our nation into the forefront of pioneering innovation and transformative technologies. We wholeheartedly invite you to embark on this exhilarating journey of exploration and creation alongside us.

  • After registration, you will get a link to join the Hackathon whatsapp group and discord channel where you will join other hackathon participants and information regarding the hackathon will be communicated.
  • You will also receive an automated email notifying you that you have registered for the hackathon.

Requirements

What to Build

We are looking for submissions that will fit in to any of the five categories that we have selected for the hackathon;

  • Water

     This category is centered around addressing water-related issues, such as water scarcity, pollution, conservation, and access to clean water.

  • Energy & Infrastructure

Participants are encouraged to tackle challenges related to energy production, conservation, and sustainability.

  • Agriculture

This category focuses on innovations in agriculture and food production.

  • Software Engineering

The Software category is a versatile category that encourages participants to develop software solutions to a wide range of problems.

  • Out of the Box

The Out of the Box category is for the most creative and unconventional projects that don't fit neatly into the other categories.

 

You can either build an actual prototype, use simulation software or come up with a detailed proposal for a system you can develop.

What to Submit

The submission will be made up of 2 items;

  1. A project proposal (Powerpoint Presentation)

The project proposal should contain;

  • The Team
  • The Concept
  • Target Audience/Market
  • How it works
  • Core Technologies
  • Market Analysis
  • Business Model
  1. A video recording of your team pitching your solution.

The video recording should contain all members of your team and should run for a maximum of 5 minutes.

1st Place
1 winner

The winning team in each category will be awarded with Ksh. 10,000 together with 1st Place certificates.

2nd Place
1 winner

The 1st runners-up team in each category will be awarded with Ksh. 7,000 together with 1st Place certificates.

3rd Place
1 winner

The team that emerges as the 2nd runners up in each category will be awarded with a special MksU Hackfest branded gift hamper.

Judging Criteria

  • Innovativenes
    Does the project create a new category of product or service? Does it clearly and meaningfully innovate beyond existing products and services?
  • Technology
    Does the project make effective and appropriate use of the major features of its chosen platform(s)? Were there significant platform features or other platforms the project could have benefitted from but failed to utilize?
  • Practicality
    Is the project able to be implemented in real life taking into the consideration the finances and technology used?
  • Sustainability
    Is the project able to be maintained at a certain rate or level or able to maintain or support a process continuously over time?
